Why was it taking so long?
Avery landed lightly on his paws, spinning to face his mentor. He'd been an apprentice for ages; he knew what he was doing, so why wasn't he a gladiator already? His mind drifted to his family once more. What would his mother say, or his father, if they could see him now? Would they be disappointed that he was still training? Would they be proud of his progress? He was snapped out of his thoughts by a set of paws on his side. The air left his lungs as he was knocked over by the other serval, and for a moment could only lay, stunned, in the dirt.
Stupid… Rule number one; keep your head in the moment during a fight! He scolded himself. This is why I'm still an apprentice. I'm not ready.
